This book offers you the opportunity to know the real U.S.A. as no tourist, and very few Americans, ever will. With Don Ennio, you can witness a enchanted milk delivery in 1936, be present (or perhaps not!) at Howie’s Funeral in 1955, visit an American military base for a short-arm inspection in 1952, depart for a visit to The Garden of Cuba in 1953, breathlessly watch Peavie’s Last Pee in 1959 and then witness the first NASA, manned, sub-orbital, space flight direct from the sidewalks of Titusville, Florida in 1961… and much more!

If people interest you as well as events, you will get to know China Doll, the legendary Honky-Tonk Angel… and the beautiful and enigmatic Dulcinea, better known as “Crossbones.” You will wonder at Rosalie’s strength, love Willy The Barber for his weakness and respect Doc Brandstein, the Jewish apothecary, for his wisdom.

If you have been to the U.S. and have seen the U.S. but now would like to know how it got that way – then you are in good hands with Don Ennio. He hopes that you will have as much pleasure reading these stories as he had writing them and would welcome comments, suggestions or criticisms c/o: delisa@arcor.de.

Enjoy!

The author was born in 1932 in New York of Italian immigrant parents. He has lived in Germany since 1967. When not cooking, he writes avidly, in particular short stories – a difficult literary art, he says, that is much neglected and underestimated in Europe. Prior to Bittersweet American Pie, he has written two German language books, Das Ami Kochbuch (The Yankee Cookbook) and Immigration in die USA, both best sellers now out of print.
